Even the most epic of adventures have to start somewhere. In some cases, they begin with a totally blank panel.
There could be a number of reasons for this. Maybe the main character is asleep, or blind. Maybe they're trapped in a darkened room. Maybe they're an omnipotent deity, ready to begin creating a universe. In the tamest of cases, they may just be looking up close at something black, like a deactivated computer screen. Whatever the reason, the blank panel holds some deep appeal in the minds of many readers. There is a sense that from this point, anything can happen, and usually does.
